3D scanners use the targets to generate a point cloud, which the scanner uses to determine its position during the scanning process (thi is why targets are also called reference points). It is therefore important that the targets are positioned in such a way that a sufficient number is recognized by the optical measuring system at all times during the scanning process. If no or if too few targets are attached, the measuring system cannot perform a measurement or the accuracy is degraded.
