Frequently Asked Questions

This page offers help in the most frequently asked questions.

Why do I need reference points?

With optical 3D scanners surface data of objects is generated based on images. Reference points are placed on or besides the part for orientation of all measurement positions. Furthermore, reference points could be used as target and coordinate markers for photo- and videogrammetry.

What to be considered during point application?

The surface must be clean and free from grease. This is mandatory for good adhesive strength. The reference points should be placed as random as possible on even surfaces of the object.

Where to apply the reference points?

The reference points are placed on or besides the measurement object. The targets are self-adhesive and stick on smooth surfaces.

How to choose the right size of points?

The point size is dependent on the resolution of the measurement system and the real object size of the field of view. Every system manufacturer has principle guidelines for the size of points. As a rule of thumb every point target should have an inner size (white) between 10 pixel and 18 pixels in the image.

How much points are needed?

The number of reference points is based on the object size and the used measuring principle of the 3D system. A higher number of reference points will lead to an increase of the bundle adjustment quality.
